Black Sand, Blue Ice and Pink Snow.....................

Half Moon Bay
So wonderful to land and what land!! Fabulous sunshine lighting up huge ranges of snowy mountains as far as we can see. But oh so changable and so quickly! Even the now familiar noise and smell is so appreciated after days at sea! Cute little chin-straps (the comic-looking police of the penguin world + aggressive with it!!) are a new discovery to us and industriously wobbling everywhere.

Deception Island
The deception is that this is not an island but a sunken active volcano! We sailed through Neptune's Throat into the flooded crater of steaming thermals. Black sand and desolate landscape! Abandoned buildings of another whaling station complete with hangar that housed the aircraft that made the first flight across Antarctica. The warm sea deterred the wildlife but seemed to encourage reckless humans!

Wilhelmina Bay
Magical! We awoke to snow settling on the decks and as we approached for our landing the clouds shifted and lit up the snowy bay - simply perfect! Stunning panoramic scenery with all hues of white, grey, blues + aqua – unbelievable! To cap it all a small shoal (?) of minke whales perform around our zodiacs – just out of this world!

After such a wonderful morning the captain performed 2 weddings (any divorces?) on the bow deck with champagne reception to this magnificent backdrop!

Culverville
We were all somewhat wobbly (like the penguins!) for the afternoon landing. Gentoo penguins this time with real knockout guano!! Beautiful pink snow algae and just amazing ice!

This must be the most outrageous place for a BBQ anywhere!! The smoke helps to mask the aroma of those darling little penguins!!

An unexpected guest as night falls........
