Up in the clouds!

I´m sitting high up in the mountains abouve Ushuaia town on a comfy cushion of very hardy and beautiful flora. Alan has gone on up to the higher level to reach the glacier – my intrepid explorer! But I know my limitations and the climb has been challenging. Rough crumbling rocks – a steep climb with blustering wind alternating with glistening occasional sun and mizzle.

There are a few other like-minded explorers dotted about but the predominant sounds are of the constantly sshussing of the mountain melt water dancing its way over the rocks and the whistling of the wind. The air is sharp and occasionally icy but clean and fresh with an evocative scent of undeterminable herbs and alpine flowers. There is a solitude and not unpleasant sense of euphoria - probably due to the reduced oxygen at this altitude some may say but I think it’s exhilaration at having made it up here and the not undoubting prospect of descent!!

Alan returns from the summit (or somewhat nearer than I) - jubilant! The brave man. So with a wind behind us – the descent – here goes!!

Such elation – we made it!! Now chocolate cake and coffee to celebrate!!

One for Laura!

Tierra del Fuego – it is said Magellan named it - Land of Fire - after the actual fires light by the local people on the banks of the Beagle Channel. I think its more to do with the fiery-looking mountainous environment and rapidly changing fiery weather – from bright scorching sunlight to biting wind and rain – all seasons in the blink of an eye. British weather has nothing on this!

A taste of those to come!

Our first sighting of Magellan and Gentoo penguins. After a bone-shaking drive for 1 and ¼ hours on rough dirt tracks (just off M3 to Buenos Airies!), short boat trip and our small party of 14 disembarked into the wild world of penguins! Crazy creatures in dinner suites wobbling about ungainly on land but porpoising like elegant torpedos in the sea! Fluffy teenagers tower over attentive parents demanding food and new clothes! So nothing new between the species there then!

Raw beauty at Fin del Mundo – end of the world – Ushuaia.

11.30pm The sun sets!

Tierra del Fuego National Parc

Is this a Famous Grouse? Nope only a Cape Goose!

Unusual transport!

Other styles of archetecture but they all seem to be built of wood and corregated metal which considering the harsh climate seems rather flimsy!

An efficient little airport and then off to our hotel - does this remind you of a film?
Exciting approach to our landing at the southerly most airport in the world! (Commercial anyway!)

One for Tom – a BoBo ´Club Sandwich´.

D-day! Off to Buenos Aires!

After a nerve-racking wait as to whether we would get on the over-booked flight we were eventually treated to wonderful seats at the sharp end! 15 hours via San Paulo glided leisurely away.
Hot exciting Buenos Airies!
Checked into BoBo - Great little hotel.
